Enrollment Procedures

All prospective members, both current and incoming, must go through the membership committee. Any questions or inquiries should be directed to the committee rather than the teachers.

The December/January re-enrollment period will follow the parent/teacher conferences and will be open to current member families, their siblings and alumni. Order of receipt of re-enrollment forms prior to the deadline will not be a factor when class assignments are determined.

Families who are new to the school may apply at the date of the open house. Others who missed the December re-enrollment can also apply at the open house or later.

Criteria for Eligibility

A child will be considered eligible for admittance if he/she is at least 24 months of age as of September 1 of the year of entrance into the school program and not more than four years 11 months old as of September 1 of the school year in which he or she is to be enrolled, unless there are special circumstances which will be determined by the parent/guardians, the teacher, and the director of the school. In the morning 2s class and the afternoon 2/3s class, the child must be at least 2 by September 1; in the morning 3s class and the afternoon 3/4s class, the child must be at least 3 by September 1. In the 4s class the child must be 4 by September 1. Any exceptions will be at the discretion of the director of the school and the teacher of the class.

Children with mental or physical disabilities will be admitted to the school in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The teacher will evaluate the child’s readiness for KNS, and may recommend that a trial period of 30 days be observed and the child re-evaluated before being admitted to the class on a permanent basis.

A child need not be toilet trained in order to be eligible for admission to KNS.

Class Assignments/Wait Lists

In determining placement for the next year, requests will be granted on a space-available basis. In the event that there are more requests for a class than can be honored, consideration will be given using the priority system listed below.

For current students:

  1. Application received by deadline
  2. Students of current KNS Board Members in good standing
  3. Timely completion of member requirements (see member requirements section)
  4. Years served in school (does not have to be consecutive)
  5. Newly enrolling siblings of current students
  6. Consideration of whether the student their first choice of placement in previous years (excluding the family’s first year of enrollment)
  7. If all factors are equal, a lottery system is used

For alumni students:

Alumni families in good standing will have priority over new families.

For new families:

All new families who have applied by the open house will be considered equally; however, there will be an attempt to diversify each class. Once a family is accepted, it has one week to respond or the opening may be forfeited.

Class Placements

Based on the above guidelines, the membership chair will recommend class placements to the teachers. Teachers will review the lists to make sure the priority system has been followed. Teachers reserve the right to make changes to the recommended class placements in order to achieve diversified, gender-balanced classrooms, and to ensure children are in classrooms best suited for their age or development.

After teachers finalize class placements, the membership chair will notify each family of their class status. If the families did not get their first choice class selection, they will be notified of the current class placement, as well as be placed on the wait list for their first choice class.

Vacancies will be filled from the wait list in the same manner as for initial enrollment, described above. Once a family is offered a place off of the wait list, it has one week to respond or the opening may be forfeited.

Progression of Students

Students will be progressed from one class to the next primarily according to age and in consultation with their parents/guardians and teacher.
