Finding Community through Preschool as a Military Family
When we moved to Maryland as a military family, we arrived with a lot of excitement, a little uncertainty, and a baby on the way. Like many military families, we were starting over - new home, new routines, and no built-in community. I remember wondering how I would find connection for my children, and honestly for myself, during yet another life transition.
Finding the right preschool close to our home in Kensington, MD became the priority for me as a stay at home mom with young children.
At the time, I was looking for more than just childcare. I wanted a preschool program that felt warm, intentional, and community driven. A place rooted in early learning, but also aware of the needs of young children and their parents alike.
As a local to me preschool serving children ages 2–5, Kensington Nursery School offered exactly what our family needed: a play-based and child-centered environment grounded in hands-on learning. The focus wasn’t on rushing academics, but on embracing curiosity, growing confidence, and social-emotional development - the foundation of true kindergarten readiness.
For my children, KNS became the first real community they’ll probably always remember at ages 2 & 3 and counting. They formed relationships with their teachers, other children, and co-opers that helped them feel safe and seen during a time of big family change with a move and a baby!
For me, as a parent navigating pregnancy, postpartum, and life far from extended family, the school gave me more than just the confidence that my children were in a great place. It also gave me community. Through participation in the cooperative schedule, I found other adults who understood this season of life and shared the values we do regarding child development. We shared more than just co-op shifts. We also shared conversations, support, laughter, and eventually friendships that I truly believe will last a lifetime.
All this to say, if you ask me what I love about KNS, I may say the large outdoor space allowing for big exploration and movement or the play-based curriculum that allows the teachers to explore what the children are showing interest in. But I know for sure I will mention the community.
Kensington Nursery School helped us build roots in a new place. It reminded me that preschool isn’t just about preparing children for what comes next in grade school - it’s about supporting whole families right now.
So if you’re searching for a preschool that values community, connection, and play-based learning, or if you’re looking for a way to create a secure routine in a season of transition, know that places like this truly exist.
And for that, I will always be grateful.
